This is a photo essay about Puerto Rico, which recently filed for bankruptcy. The US is no longer allowing Puerto Rico to maintain its relationship status with the US and would push Puerto Rico to either become a US state or become an independent nation. Many of the citizens believe that joining the US means sacrificing their culture, though becoming an independent nation takes years of rebuilding. The fact that the US allotted Puerto Rico to fall this deep into this economic disaster, then is forcing them to make a decision, means they are acting as their superior instead of equal. The relationship between Puerto Rico and the US can be viewed similarly to that of a slave and their master. Many of the people of Puerto Rico believe that the US has truly colonized Puerto Rico.
